Dangote Petroleum Refinery has extended the closing date of its landmark initial public offering (IPO) by two weeks.

Informed market sources said the extention is to accommodate surging demand, according to informed market sources familiar with the IPO.

Most notably, the decision gives retail and institutional investors extra time to participate in what is poised to be Africa’s largest-ever share sale—a N2.15 trillion ($1.6 billion) offering aimed at expanding the mega-refinery’s capacity and deepening retail participation across the continent.

The offer, which opened on September 14, seeks to raise approximately N2.15 trillion through the sale of 4.1 billion ordinary shares at N525 each. The minimum subscription is 10 shares, requiring N5,250 before applicable charges.

With the IPO closing date now extended by two weeks, the unprecedented demand for Africa’s largest equity offering will continue to trigger widespread liquidity shifts across the broader Nigerian capital market.

Investment platforms have continued to report heavy traffic spikes as retail investors log on to submit late applications.

Before the extension, a flurry of high-stakes financial activity swept through commercial banks, brokerage firms, and digital trading platforms across Nigeria on Monday, October 12, as retail and institutional investors staged what was taken as a final dash to secure shares in the landmark Dangote Petroleum Refinery Initial Public Offering (IPO) ahead of its previous deadline of October 13.

“The success of this IPO will not be measured only by how many people subscribe. It will also be measured by whether the market that emerges afterwards is deeper, better informed and more capable of financing the next company of comparable ambition”, said Sadiq Tijani, Equity Analyst with Coronation Research.

Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals Initial Public Offering (IPO) is a landmark financial event, marking Africa’s largest-ever public offering.

Priced at N525 per share, retail investors in the IPO which opened on Monday September 14 can buy a minimum bundle of 10 shares for N5,250 (roughly $4), making it heavily accessible to everyday citizens.

With a target raise of approximately $1.6 billion, shares of the nearly $50 billion enterprise are expected to officially list on the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) shortly after the offer closes.

“We’ve seen continuous high volume straight through the weekend leading into today,” said a senior digital product manager at Lagos-based investment firm.

“The retail interest in owning a piece of the world’s largest single-train refinery has been unlike anything seen in the Nigerian capital market in recent history.”

Financial institutions have simultaneously raised security alerts to protect first-time investors, urging subscribers to stick strictly to authorised banking apps, accredited stockbrokers, and verified receiving agents to avoid fraudulent schemes exploiting the frenzy.

The sheer scale of the N2.15 trillion base Offer has sent ripple effects throughout the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX). Market analysts highlighted that investors actively liquidated portions of their secondary market holdings over recent trading sessions to free up capital for the refinery’s primary subscription.

“Money is actively migrating into the offer,” explained a Lagos-based financial analyst. “Investors are rebalancing portfolios—taking profits from existing blue-chip stocks and banking assets to maximize their allocation in what many view as a generational infrastructure asset.”

As receiving channels prepare to lock down subscriptions on Tuesday evening, market focus will pivot toward allotment details and formal listing procedures.

Under the terms outlined in the offer prospectus, allotted shares are scheduled to be credited to Central Securities Clearing System (CSCS) accounts within 15 business days following allotment approval, paving the way for secondary market trading to commence.

For millions of Nigerians participating in the public offer, the extended closing date represents the final window to claim a direct stake in the megaproject that continues to reshape the continent’s energy landscape.

Nigeria’s capital market faces a major test of its capacity to attract retail investors as the Dangote Refinery initial public offering (IPO) targets 10 million investors, exceeding the country’s current active investor base of fewer than six million.
