NANJING, China — September 5, 2026 (XOL Africa) — Chinese audiovisual content is gaining a wider distribution platform in South Africa through China Hour, a year-round media initiative jointly operated by Jiangsu Broadcasting Corporation (JSBC) and the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC).

The initiative, launched in June 2026, has brought more than 100 hours of Chinese programming to South African audiences through SABC’s television network and its SABC+ digital streaming platform.

The partnership represents a significant development in China-Africa media cooperation, creating what JSBC describes as the first year-round, dedicated daily broadcasting arrangement between a Chinese broadcasting institution and an African national public broadcaster.

Chinese content reaches South African audiences

China Hour’s programming covers a broad range of genres, including drama, documentaries and short-form productions, offering audiences programming focused on China’s contemporary society, history, culture and natural environment.

Among the titles being distributed are documentary series including The Grand Canal, Wetlands Our Land, Reading on the Island and Architecture China, alongside short-form productions such as A Dream Like True Love and Wildfire.

The initiative has already recorded an early success on SABC’s digital platform. The Chinese fantasy drama The Starry Love, which began airing on SABC2 in July in a dedicated late-evening slot, entered SABC+’s monthly Top 10 chart during its debut month.

According to JSBC, this makes it the first Chinese television series to reach the platform’s Top 10.

AI technology supports localisation

A key component of the partnership is the localisation of Chinese programming for South African audiences.

JSBC said it is using its Lychee Media AI Module to support automated multilingual translation and dubbing, combined with human editorial review.

The hybrid approach is intended to accelerate content adaptation while taking account of local languages, cultural context and broadcasting requirements.

For African broadcasters, such technologies could increasingly reduce some of the cost and time associated with adapting international programming for local audiences, while allowing content producers to distribute larger catalogues across different linguistic markets.

Partnership builds on wider China-Africa media ties

The latest agreement builds on more than a decade of exchanges between JSBC and African media organisations.

JSBC and SABC initially announced the China Hour cooperation in April 2026 following SABC leadership’s participation in the 13th China Internet Audio & Video Convention.

The two organisations subsequently signed a new cooperation agreement in August during the 7th Forum on China-Africa Media Cooperation in Beijing. The signing was witnessed by representatives from China’s National Radio and Television Administration and South Africa’s Department of Communications and Digital Technologies.

JSBC is also set to co-organise the China Pavilion at MIP Africa in Cape Town in October, where it plans to showcase new intellectual properties and explore cross-border content licensing opportunities.

Looking ahead, JSBC and SABC intend to expand cooperation beyond programme distribution into content curation, platform operations and audience development.

The partners are also inviting wider participation from media organisations across Africa, potentially positioning China Hour as a broader channel for the distribution and localisation of Chinese audiovisual content on the continent.
