PARIS, Nov. 3, 2026 — French energy group TotalEnergies has signed a five-year agreement with ADNOC Gas to purchase up to 1.6mn tonnes of liquefied natural gas from the United Arab Emirates, strengthening its global supply portfolio as competition intensifies to secure gas supplies for European and Asian markets.
In a joint statement released on Tuesday, the companies said deliveries under the agreement were expected to begin in 2026, although they did not disclose the financial value of the contract or the destinations of the LNG cargoes.
The deal expands an established partnership between TotalEnergies and Abu Dhabi’s state-backed energy sector, reinforcing the UAE’s role as a supplier of natural gas to international markets.
The agreement comes as major energy companies seek to maintain diversified LNG portfolios, balancing demand from European buyers seeking energy security with longer-term consumption growth in Asia.
Stéphane Michel, president of gas, renewables and power at TotalEnergies, said the agreement would strengthen the company’s ability to serve customers across both regions.
“The signing of this agreement with ADNOC Gas marks another important milestone in our long-standing partnership and highlights our commitment to deepening our cooperation over the long term,” Michel said.
He added that the UAE’s geographical position between Europe and Asia would support TotalEnergies’ position as a leading international LNG portfolio supplier.
The contract provides for up to 1.6mn tonnes of LNG over five years, equivalent to an average of 320,000 tonnes annually if the full contracted volume is delivered evenly throughout the period.
For ADNOC Gas, the agreement represents another opportunity to expand its international customer base and secure medium-term commitments for its LNG production.
Fatema Al Nuaimi, chief executive of ADNOC Gas, said the company was seeking to capitalise on rising international demand for natural gas.
“Global demand for LNG continues to grow, and ADNOC Gas is well positioned to capture that opportunity,” Al Nuaimi said.
“This agreement reflects the strength of our LNG business, the competitiveness of our supply offering and our ability to secure long-term partnerships that support growth, enhance resilience and create lasting value for shareholders.”
ADNOC Gas, which is listed on the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange, operates across the gas processing and sales value chain, supplying approximately 60 per cent of the UAE’s domestic sales gas requirements while serving customers in more than 20 countries.
Its international LNG marketing activities form part of ADNOC’s wider trading platform, combining capabilities from ADNOC Gas, energy investment company XRG and ADNOC Trading.
The arrangement allows the Abu Dhabi group to coordinate production, marketing and trading activities across international gas markets.
TotalEnergies, meanwhile, remains one of the world’s largest LNG suppliers, with a global portfolio of 44mn tonnes in 2025, supported by investments in liquefaction projects across multiple regions.
The French company operates an integrated LNG business covering gas production, shipping, trading, regasification and LNG bunkering.
It also holds access to more than 20mn tonnes a year of regasification capacity in Europe, giving it infrastructure to receive imported LNG and supply regional customers.
The new agreement is consistent with TotalEnergies’ strategy of expanding natural gas within its overall energy portfolio.
The company aims to increase the share of natural gas in its sales mix to close to 50 per cent by 2030, while pursuing reductions in carbon emissions and methane emissions associated with its gas operations.
TotalEnergies has positioned LNG as an important component of its energy transition strategy, particularly in markets where natural gas can displace coal in electricity generation.
However, natural gas remains a fossil fuel, and its environmental benefits depend partly on controlling methane leakage across production, transportation and distribution.
For ADNOC Gas, the contract adds to its international supply commitments as the UAE seeks to strengthen its position in global energy markets through investments in gas processing, LNG infrastructure and international partnerships.
The agreement also underscores the continuing importance of flexible LNG supply arrangements for major energy traders, which can direct cargoes between regional markets according to demand and commercial conditions.
Neither TotalEnergies nor ADNOC Gas provided details on pricing mechanisms, delivery schedules beyond the expected 2026 start, or whether the contracted volumes would be allocated to specific markets.
