FREETOWN, Sierra Leone (XOL Africa) — Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has been elected chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Authority of Heads of State and Government.
Faye emerged as the new leader of the regional bloc during the 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government held in Sierra Leone, according to officials.
The development was confirmed in a statement issued by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, spokesperson for Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Faye’s election comes as ECOWAS continues to navigate regional challenges, including political instability, security threats, economic integration efforts and tensions following the withdrawal of several member states from the bloc.
The Senegalese leader, who took office in April 2024 after winning the presidential election, is expected to lead efforts to strengthen cooperation among West African nations during his tenure.
ECOWAS, founded in 1975, brings together 15 West African countries and focuses on regional economic integration, peace and security, and political cooperation.
